I just joined the CordCutters brotherhood. I currently have Spectrum service which is costing me $205 per month. Unfortunately I cannot get any OTA "local" channels so that is not an option for me.

For a number of reasons not the least of which is the cost and crappy Spectrum service, our POA hired a specialist consultant to look for the best alternatives for us. At the POA meeting recently the majority of home owners voted in favor of the proposed best option to meet the needs and desires of our community.

Fiber Optic cabling will be installed for every household and includes an interface and modem/router in a room of our choice at NO cost to homeowners. The monthly charge will be $42.95 per month including taxes and fees. This will provide speeds of 500Gbs down and 500Gbs up. The service does not provide streaming TV boxes and so on. That will be up to the end users to do so.

There are dozens of different "boxes" available so I will be looking for suggestions for when the install is done at my house. The consultant did say thay HULU was one of the better streaming services.

But on the downside I just found out that HULU, as of August last, have stopped supporting the HULU app on many BluRay players; my Sony is one of those. So that means I will be looking for a box if I go with HULU. Am I correct in assuming that HULU can be streamed on a laptop or desktop PC?

The install will take about 6 months to complete.

You may want to take a look at YouTube TV. We've been using it for the past few years since we cut the cord and we really like it. We have all our regular local channels plus a slew of others for only $50-ish a month. Hulu was a very close second but just didn't have the "basic" channels we watch.

Hi Lee, we are located in Clearview Estates, part of Citrus Hills...come on down. We could not get Fiber Optic as individual homeowners, it had to be a community venture. The vote was 85% in gavor. The $43 price is fixed for us for 10 years.

We are starting to look at options for streaming including YouTube. One thing I do not want to do is to buy a box then find it does not get the channels we watch, in particular local networks. I would also like to find one that has PBS, we are big fans of Masterpiece but at least I have a PBS account so can watch after the fact, not live as it were.

Any and all suggestions would be most welcome.

I'm doing pretty good here in Philly. Got a 39 dollar deal for 100/100. It used to end up costing me 50 with modem rental and fees, but then one of my discounts fell off for the second year and while I WAS able to get them to take most of it off again for year 2, it's still 5 bucks a month more. So now I'm at 55.

Welcome to CordCutters! We use Roku and watch local stations OTA with some Antennas. However, right now, the majority of local channels aren't available because local stations have recently "re-packed" their signals. Viewers are told to rescan, but apparently there are issues and the stations aren't coming through. Stations are having to repair towers, but we've had nothing but wind, rain and now snow for the past several days, and it's been impossible for them to climb the towers to make the repairs. So thank goodness for Roku and Hulu!
