I badly want to cut the cord. Have been looking around at the various services, and it seems it's impossible to get cable networks (Discovery, Comedy Central, etc.) without commercials. Am I right, or have I missed something?

No, you're not missing anything.

We had Spectrum bundled for years. About 2 years ago we cut the cord and now only have Spectrum for internet.

Even with cable tv you still get commercials. Necessary evil. Which would make sense that if you pay for a service, you're probably still going to be getting commercials. For example, we have YouTube TV but still get all those lovely commercials. The only place you won't get commercials is services like Netflix, Amazon Prime movies, etc.

Didn't cable TV have fewer commercials? I mean, like way back in the early to mid 80s?

We still get commercials on Hulu and Netflix... but we're able to fast forward through them easily.

Just about all the streaming services have commercials. Some such as Hulu and CBS All Acess in particular DO offer a commercial free option for more money per month. Most of us just live with the commercials.
